Amazon expands opportunities for AI researchers

As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries, the demand for research into more capable, secure, and reliable AI systems is accelerating.

Amazon is supporting that work through its Fall 2026 Amazon Research Awards, which opened for proposals on October 1 and has extended its application deadline to November 11, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

The program is inviting research proposals across nine technical areas, including agentic artificial intelligence, information security, automated reasoning, cryptography, and multimodal AI.

Selected researchers will receive unrestricted funding and Amazon Web Services (AWS) promotional credits, along with access to technical resources and opportunities to collaborate with Amazon scientists.

The initiative is part of Amazon’s broader effort to connect academic research with real-world technology challenges.

Nine research areas are accepting proposals

Amazon’s Fall 2026 call covers nine areas spanning AI systems, security, hardware, and evaluation.

Research areaWhat it explores
Agentic AIAI systems capable of planning and performing multistep tasks
AI for Information SecurityApplying AI to security challenges
Amazon SecurityResearch addressing security systems and practices
Automated ReasoningMethods for verifying and reasoning about complex systems
AWS CryptographyCryptographic methods and secure computing
Build on TrainiumImproving AI kernels and frameworks on AWS Trainium
Multilingual and Contextual AI EvaluationEvaluating AI across languages and contexts
On-Device Multimodal PerceptionAI systems that process multiple forms of data on devices
Synthetic Data Generation for Multimodal PerceptionCreating synthetic data to support multimodal AI research

Each area has its own technical scope and submission requirements. Researchers should consult the individual call descriptions before preparing a proposal.

Amazon says it will consider research involving theory, practical applications, and novel technical methods.

Why agentic AI is a major focus

One of the program’s most timely research areas is agentic AI.

Unlike traditional AI systems that primarily generate responses to individual prompts, agentic systems are designed to plan and carry out sequences of actions toward a goal.

These capabilities could support applications in software development, scientific research, enterprise operations, and other industries.

However, agentic systems also introduce complex research challenges.

For example, how can developers verify that an AI system follows instructions correctly? How should an agent respond when information is incomplete? And what safeguards are necessary when automated systems interact with sensitive information or external tools?

Research into agentic AI can help address questions involving reliability, evaluation, security, and system design.

Amazon’s inclusion of agentic AI alongside automated reasoning and information security reflects the growing importance of building systems that are not only capable but also dependable.

What selected researchers receive

Amazon Research Awards provides more than financial support.

According to the company, selected projects receive several forms of assistance.

The official announcement does not specify a universal grant amount for all nine research areas. Funding levels and other terms should be verified against the relevant call documentation.

Why academic-industry research partnerships matter

Artificial intelligence research increasingly requires access to specialized computing infrastructure, datasets, technical expertise, and opportunities to test new approaches.

Universities contribute foundational research, interdisciplinary expertise, and the training of future scientists.

Technology companies can contribute infrastructure, applied research challenges, and experience deploying systems at scale.

When structured effectively, these collaborations can help researchers explore problems that would be difficult to address using academic resources alone.

Amazon’s Research Awards program is one example of that model.

The company is also expanding its university research relationships.

In September 2026, Amazon announced the Stanford and Amazon Research Initiative, a collaboration focused on AI, energy, healthcare, and other scientific challenges.

The initiative includes joint research projects, PhD fellowships, and workshops connecting academic researchers with Amazon scientists.

In October, Amazon and Georgia Tech announced the Georgia Tech–Amazon Science Hub, supporting research in robotics, industrial and systems engineering, aerospace technology, and autonomous systems.

The hub is also expected to support research workshops and outreach initiatives involving the broader Atlanta technology community.

Together, these initiatives illustrate Amazon’s expanding investment in university-industry research collaboration.

What this means for women in STEM

For women working in artificial intelligence, computer science, cybersecurity, and related disciplines, access to research funding and computing infrastructure can be important to advancing scientific work.

Research grants can support the development of new methods, enable experimentation, and create opportunities to collaborate with scientists outside an applicant’s institution.

The Fall 2026 program covers areas that are especially relevant to the next generation of AI systems, including trustworthy AI, security, language evaluation, and advanced computing.

These opportunities may be of interest to eligible women researchers and research teams working in those fields.

However, Amazon Research Awards is not described as a women-only funding program, and applicants must meet the program’s published eligibility requirements.

The announcement also does not identify women researchers as recipients of this Fall 2026 round, because the application period remains open.

Future award announcements could provide opportunities to highlight women scientists whose research receives support.

Amazon says proposals will be evaluated based on scientific quality, creativity, and potential for impact at scale.

The application deadline was extended to November 11, giving researchers additional time to prepare submissions.

The bigger picture: Investing in the future of AI

The Fall 2026 Amazon Research Awards program reflects the growing need for research that addresses both the capabilities and limitations of emerging technologies.

As AI becomes more deeply integrated into businesses, scientific research, software development, and everyday products, questions about security, accuracy, performance, and responsible deployment become increasingly important.

Supporting research across multiple disciplines can contribute to progress in those areas.

For eligible researchers, the current call offers an opportunity to seek funding, computing resources, and technical support for projects addressing some of the most significant challenges in modern computing.

And for the broader STEM community, the initiative underscores the continuing importance of partnerships between academic institutions and technology companies in advancing scientific discovery.

With the November 11 deadline approaching, interested researchers have a limited window to review the available opportunities and submit their proposals.
