Base44 expands beyond building apps from scratch

Artificial intelligence is changing how software gets built—and increasingly, who can participate in the development process.

Base44, the AI-powered application development platform acquired by Wix in 2025, announced the launch of Base Code on September 28, 2026.

The new standalone product allows development teams to connect existing GitHub repositories to a shared cloud workspace, where AI assists with understanding code, configuring development environments, and making changes.

The launch marks a significant expansion for Base44, which initially gained attention for allowing users to create applications by describing what they wanted in everyday language.

With Base Code, the company is extending that approach to established software projects rather than focusing exclusively on applications built from scratch.

The product is intended to enable professionals across product management, design, quality assurance, operations, and marketing to contribute to software development while maintaining engineering review processes. The Chronicle-Journal

What is Base Code?

Base Code is an AI-powered collaborative development environment designed to work with existing software repositories.

Instead of requiring users to create a new application from the beginning, the platform connects to a GitHub repository and analyzes the existing codebase.

According to Base44, its AI agent can configure a cloud development environment, prepare infrastructure and sample data, and generate a working preview.

Team members can then collaborate in the same workspace, request changes through conversational instructions, and review the resulting application.

Proposed modifications can be submitted as GitHub pull requests for engineering review.

The platform also includes administrative controls intended for enterprise teams, including restrictions on approved GitHub organizations and encrypted handling of secrets.

These are company-described capabilities; independent security and performance results were not provided in the launch announcement.

Why this matters for nontechnical professionals

Traditionally, making changes to production software requires programming expertise and access to development tools.

Product managers, designers, marketers, and operations professionals often identify problems or propose improvements but depend on engineers to implement them.

AI-powered development platforms are beginning to change that workflow.

Base Code aims to allow professionals outside engineering to participate more directly in making and testing software changes.

For example, a product manager might propose an interface adjustment, a designer might refine a user experience, or an operations professional might request a workflow improvement.

The platform’s shared preview environment is designed to make those changes visible to other team members before they are submitted for engineering review.

The important distinction is that Base Code is not intended to eliminate the need for software engineers.

Instead, its announced workflow keeps engineers involved in reviewing proposed changes while expanding participation in the development process.

Base44’s strategy: From no-code apps to enterprise software

Base44 was founded in 2024 by Israeli entrepreneur Maor Shlomo and acquired by Wix in June 2025 for an initial $80 million.

The platform became known for vibe coding, an approach to software creation in which users describe an application in natural language and AI generates much of the underlying software.

Since the acquisition, Base44 has expanded its product portfolio.

In March 2026, the company introduced Superagents, enabling users to create personalized AI agents through conversational instructions.

In June, Base44 announced Base 1, its own AI model trained specifically for application development.

Base Code represents another step in that strategy, expanding from new application creation into the maintenance and development of existing software.

Base44 reports rapid revenue growth

The product expansion comes during a period of significant reported business growth.

In August 2026, Shlomo announced that Base44 had surpassed $200 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR).

The figure suggests strong commercial demand for AI-powered application development.

Annual recurring revenue is a recurring-revenue run rate, however, and should not be confused with total revenue collected during a completed financial year.

Base44’s expansion into existing software repositories could open additional opportunities among established companies that already maintain production applications.

Women in STEM and the democratization of software development

Although Base44’s announcement did not identify a woman executive or researcher leading the Base Code launch, the technology raises important questions about access to software development.

Women working in product management, user experience design, marketing technology, operations, and entrepreneurship may increasingly encounter tools that allow them to prototype and test technical ideas without relying entirely on traditional programming workflows.

For women founders, this could lower some of the initial barriers associated with building software-based businesses.

An entrepreneur developing a customer portal, internal business tool, or digital service may be able to explore product concepts without immediately assembling a full engineering team.

However, easier software creation does not automatically solve challenges involving product security, accessibility, privacy, reliability, or long-term maintenance.

Those responsibilities remain essential, particularly when applications handle customer information or support business-critical operations.

The opportunity lies in combining broader access to technical tools with the expertise needed to build trustworthy products.

The changing relationship between AI and software engineers

Base Code enters a competitive market where AI development tools are rapidly evolving.

Platforms such as Lovable, Replit, and Cursor have helped popularize different approaches to AI-assisted coding and software creation.

As these products mature, companies are increasingly competing on their ability to support more complex projects, team collaboration, existing infrastructure, and enterprise requirements.

Base44’s approach reflects that shift.

By connecting AI-generated changes to established GitHub repositories and engineering review workflows, the company is positioning Base Code for organizations that already have software products and development teams.

The broader question is no longer simply whether AI can generate code.

It is whether AI-assisted development can reliably fit into the systems, standards, and processes businesses already use.

What comes next for Base44?

Base Code was announced as available to builders at launch.

Its long-term impact will depend on adoption, the quality of AI-generated changes, integration with existing development workflows, and the ability of organizations to maintain security and oversight.

For software teams, the product offers another approach to collaboration between technical and nontechnical professionals.

For entrepreneurs, it reflects the continued expansion of tools designed to make software creation more accessible.

And for women pursuing careers in STEM, it highlights a changing industry in which technical literacy, product thinking, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration may become increasingly valuable.

As AI development platforms move beyond generating new applications and into maintaining existing software, the boundaries between creating, designing, and managing technology may continue to evolve.
